Welcome to Unpopular Joy!
This is a place for teens who want what’s real. Authenticity is so much more satisfying than popularity.
But if that’s true, why do so many teens, in the process of discovering who they really are, act fake?
Why do they spend so much time and energy pursuing popularity, trying to impress each other rather than really caring about each other?
Having four kids of my own, who like to tell me what they’re thinking about, I understand a lot of their frustrations.
The frustration of seeing people change, depending on who they’re around … of trying to be a true friend, only to find out that true friendship isn’t highly valued … even the feeling that comes when adults treat you like a teenager instead of like a real person … as if they don’t even expect you to be authentic.
How do you even figure out who you are or who you want to become when there’s such a lack of authenticity and even a lack of expectation of authenticity?
The answer is in Jesus Christ. When you trust in Jesus, give your life to Him, and spend time with Him each day, you find your identity in being identified with Him and His purposes.
That’s how you find what’s real. That’s how you be real. That’s how you have real joy, no matter what anyone else thinks or says or does.
Then, because of Jesus, you can be someone who does care about others, whether it’s popular or not, and whether they really care about you or not.
And you can have fun, too — real fun, without putting on some kind of mask.
Don’t be afraid to ask tough questions, to think deeply, to work hard, to care about others, and to enjoy life!
